Patents

A “patent” is the exclusive right granted by statute to the inventor for a novel and non-obvious invention, to use and develop the invention and to prevent others from manufacturing, selling, or using the invention.

The patent is for an invention that can be characterized in one or more of the following categories: a process, a machine or a device, a composition or a formulation, or an improvement of an existing idea within one of these categories. The patent is granted for a non-extendable term of 20 years from the priority date or the date of filing the patent application. Once a patent is granted, the inventor holds the exclusive use rights, for the term, provided the maintenance fees or annuities are periodically paid to maintain the patent on the Patent Register. The inventor can enforce his exclusive rights against anyone who uses the invention without his permission.
